Principles

How we build anything.

Ten rules that govern every sentence, system, and engagement. The work and the words are the same discipline.


These principles are the foundation. They aren't in priority order — they're ten lenses applied to the same piece of work. A page, a sentence, a component, a database schema: each is tested against each.

Sometimes they pull in different directions. When they do, the work is to find the version that holds them at once.


Principle One

Simple.

The simplest words, smallest stack, fewest dependencies.

Use the simplest words, structures, and systems that do the job. Not because simplicity is virtuous — because it's harder, more honest, more useful. Anyone can add a feature, a layer, an adjective. Simplicity is the result of doing the work: cutting, reducing, finding the one solution that doesn't need explaining.

Simplicity isn't minimalism. Spandera uses warm colours, generous typography, considered punctuation. None of it is in the way of clarity; it serves clarity. The rule isn't fewer things — it's no things that don't earn their place.


Principle Two

Efficient.

Every word, line, and element earns its place.

Every word, line of code, design element, and client hour earns its place. If a thing can be removed without losing meaning, remove it. Efficient is a tighter test than simple — simple work can still carry filler. Efficient asks each piece to justify its existence.

Waste compounds. A site with twenty unused scripts loads slowly forever. A sentence with three redundant words on every page reads tiredly forever. Spandera ships work that doesn’t carry its own dead weight.

Fast.

Page weight, render time, and the time to the point all matter.

Reads quickly. Loads quickly. Lands quickly. The reader's time and the user's attention are the most respected resources in any system the studio builds. Speed isn't just an engineering metric — a homepage that takes ten seconds to scan for its point fails the same test as a page that takes ten seconds to load.

Get to the thing. Don't ask the audience to work for what should be obvious. Most important information first. Short sentences as the default. Long sentences earn their length.

Robust.

Built to withstand stress, change, and failure.

A robust site doesn't break when traffic spikes; a robust app doesn't lose data when the network drops; a robust process doesn't depend on a single person remembering the right steps. Robustness is the unglamorous foundation of confidence — in the work, in the schedule, in what gets shipped on Friday.

The discipline is two things at once. Holding up under conditions that weren't there when the work was built — new browsers, more users, edge cases, partial failures. And foundations over features: build on platforms that survive change.


Principle Five

Honest.

Visible pricing, realistic timelines, named limits, owned mistakes.

Real about what works, what doesn't, what costs what, what takes how long. Most studios pad their proposals, hide their prices, oversell their timelines, and quietly hope clients don't notice the gap between the pitch and the work. Spandera does the opposite. This is the principle that ties the others together. A simple, efficient, fast, robust lie is still a lie. Without honesty, the other principles become tools for misleading.

Automated.

Repetitive work is removed by design, not endured by people. Every system Spandera builds asks the same question: what is the human actually deciding here, and what should the machine handle without being asked? Automation done well buys back time, attention, and freedom — for the client, and for the studio.

This principle has only become possible at this scale because of AI. The old way to automate was a thousand lines of brittle rules. The new way is to combine clean pipelines with AI for the messy in-between — and that combination is one of the things the studio builds.

Flexible.

Built to bend rather than break; future-proofed by principle, not prediction.

Flexibility is the antidote to over-engineering. The temptation, when nobody knows what’s coming, is to build for everything that might. The discipline is the opposite: build for what’s needed now, in a way that can adapt later. Small surface area, clear boundaries, loose coupling.

Eloquent.

Expressive without being flashy, precise without being plain.

This principle is the brand's editorial conscience. It rules out two failure modes at once. On one side: marketing voice — buzzwords, exclamation marks, hollow superlatives. On the other: corporate voice — flat, hedged, instantly forgettable. The brand sits between them, in the register of writing that meant to be read.

A site or app isn't finished when it launches; it's only just begun working. Care, properly applied, IS optimisation — the practice of looking at what real users actually do, what real data actually shows, and making the work better month after month. The two words name the same discipline from different angles.

Real users find edge cases the studio's tests missed. Real data reveals which calls-to-action work and which don't. Search performance shifts as the web around the site shifts. New AI capabilities arrive every few months that could be folded in. A site that isn't being looked at is decaying, slowly. A site that's being cared for is getting better.

Not maintenance — maintenance is patching what breaks. Optimised is improvements landed monthly, performance watched, content updated, search position tracked, the occasional bigger evolution shaped as the business grows. Every project is a living thing because it is one.
